Agree with the absence of a channel. Why do they keep wanting to make it go west? My long-term memory had it coming out and turning a bit east to run down the Oak Island/Long Beach shore before heading out to sea. The shrimp boats used it. The Blue Water Princess used it. Lots of boats used it. All the shoaling in the ICW ought to be telling them something. Maybe it guarantees their jobs. In the past I used it all the time. Now, I make the long run to Southport. It would be great to have a wave & current expert weigh in on this nonsense.

My grandparents came to America from Flores in the 19th century… from Fajanzinha and Fajangrande… a whaling captain and a old maid who finally got married! I still had cousins living there in the 1980s . Now, all gone, only distant, younger generations gone to Sao Miguel or Mainland. Love to know if anyone has information regarding them… Antoine da Rosa Rogers, Ana Cardoso. My father was their youngest son, Louis Rogers, born 1903. Me, I live in Hawaii and am at end of life.

Hello Sir, I am planning a non-stop North Atlantic passage from Gibraltar to Halifax. Would you advise this route from Madeira to Bermuda for the trans-Atlantic passage. Were there any major challenges when you crossed it?

In 2005 I made good use of the MARPA feature on my Raymarine radar display to track other vessels as we approached the coast of Portugal. We crossed the very busy shipping channel off the coast of Europe. MARPA has a very marginal target tracking capability compared with AIS, but back then it was the only option. Today, with an AIS receiver installed, I still make good use of the feature to track those vessel (e.g., fishing trawlers) that do not broadcast on AIS.

Too complicated. I will take a legal size pad and pen any day over all this.
